Minority Media Conference
Tuesday 09 March 2010, 08:52
Inspire’s co-founder Tahmina Saleem was invited to give a presentation at a conference with the senior editors of the Guardian’s G2, Weekend, and Comments sections. She was joined on the panel by Aftab Malik of Canopus Consulting and writer and activist Simon Fletcher.
Tahmina highlighted what the Guardian does well and what they don’t do well in reflecting diverse communities. She ended with advice on potential editorial pieces that could be run to cover them in a more reflective way.
The senior editors then questioned the experts on what they could do better, in order to be more conscious of covering broader perspectives from Britain’s ethnic communities.
The ultimate aim for the Guardian is to reflect the society of Britain today that goes beyond tokenism, discrimination, and stereotyping, to one of exploring social inclusion and mainstreaming the diverse voices of marginalised minority communities. This conference was a step in the direction towards those positive aims.
